I want to let you know that Chester is settling in beautifully with our family!
He sleeps with my 15-year old daughter at night and he usually sleeps upside down so he seems to be quite relaxed. He loves to play and to give kisses. We go for lots of walks and he does great on a leash and in a crate. He gets very excited when anyone goes into the kitchen but we are sticking to dog food for him. He has dry food available to him all the time and we make a ‘breakfast’ and ‘dinner’ of wet food mixed with some dry.
We had a vet visit on Saturday and he is going to our groomer tomorrow. He has been sleeping near me while I work this morning. He is such a love and we are so happy to have him.
Our 11 year old son loves to play with Chester and has found that Chester is very good at retrieving balls – he pounces on the ball! Our cat, Gypsie, is doing well with him. She is around him a lot and gives him a hiss if he gets a little too squirrely.
Thank you for helping us to add Chester to our family. There is a picture attached – we will send more.
Warmly,
Sheryl D.
Dudley is doing great! He’s got his ecollar off, and although he caught a respiratory infection a few days later, he is on antibiotics and cough medicine and he is almost to full health! Everyone falls in love with him the moment they see him, especially when they see him sit and stand like he does (I tell people he’s part meerkat!). He is so full of energy and happiness, and each time I see that amazing smile of his, I can’t imagine anything else in the world possibly ever being as cute as he is!
He sleeps at the foot of my bed or on a comforter I folded up on the floor right next to it, he is always where I am and just loves all his toys! He does amazing at the dog park-wagging his tail at everyone, and my 3 young nephews positively ADORE him like crazy!! The eldest even invited Dudley to his 9th birthday party last week, and he got to meet so many of his new relatives!
I wanted to let you know that Dudley was on an internet radio show on March 29th with internationally known animal trainer and animal communicator / pet psychic Laura Stinchfeild. She always has rescue orgainizations and people’s pets on her show, and I have been a fan of hers since I found her show via podcast. I called in with the hopes that I could get through and hear a little of what Dudley had to say! I thought you would be interested in hearing it, although it left me quite speechless. I am the second caller on the show.
Thank you so much for rescuing so many animals! I am so so so so lucky that you brought Dudley to the grooming salon that Friday-I can’t imagine not having this incredible ball of sunshine and happiness in my life!

I adopted Felix on 18 Feb 12. My son and I have renamed him to Alex. He is doing amazing. He’s starting to talk to us now. He tells us what he wants lol. He’s loves to play and run around. He’s super excited whenever we get home from being gone. His leg is healing nicely and he’s doing much better on it.

I’ve been meaning to send this for a while now, and seeing your organization at the Animal Fair over the weekend made me realize it’s now been two years since you helped me find my buddy, Weasley, at that same event. His name was Rusty back then, and I remember he was shaking when you put him in my arms – there were so many people and dogs and general chaos all around. But I held him tight, he started purring, and he went home with me (in the pouring rain) just a little while later.
That’s Weasley in front, the handsome orange tabby. He now has a feline sister, Mozzie (in the background) and a canine sister, Caffrey – both of whom keep him busy. Weasley loves to come under the covers with me on these cooler nights, and he’s quick to remind me if he hasn’t had treats for a while. (Though his definition of “a while” is somewhat shorter than mine.)
Thanks for all you do!

I just wanted you to know that Sofie is doing just wonderful. She’s so full of energy, and is totally enjoying her new forever home. She loves the huge yard, our Golden, Murphy, and is doing better every day with the cats.
She is behind me every where I go, and doesn’t sleep until I sleep, I’ve never seen this much energy from a 1-1/2 year old! She goes on walks every day, and even had the chance to meet the goats. We will work with her and herding. All in all we are very, very pleased with our new family member. Thanks for this wonder spirit!

I thought you might enjoy this picture of Jack aka Emmit. We adopted him 12/28/09, and he has been an absolute treasure. I know people say their dog is the best, but Jack truly is. He has enriched our lives so very much. Our only regret is that we didn’t have him as a puppy. Thanks to all of you, and hope things are going well.

I work at Soma Intimates and met one of your associates yesterday, who mentioned that I should send an update for the alumni files.
My husband and I adopted 6 month old Ebony (now known as Baby Girl/Nina) in 2009 after finding her at Petsmart, where she had done such a good job of shrinking into the background that she was left behind after everyone else had gone. I thought she was beautiful with her silky black coat and wide eyes, and in special need of a home as she was shy and not interested in showcasing herself at all. We had recently talked about getting a companion for our 8 month old boy-cat Barnaby, and she was too much of a coincidence to ignore. We were prepared to keep them apart for days or weeks if we had to, per the introduction guidelines online, however after letting them meet through a window and then through a tiny crack in the door, they seemed civil enough and we let Nina roam the apartment with Barnaby contained in a crate. We progressed to letting Barnaby meet her while on his leash, and by the end of the night, they were getting to know each other out in the open. Having never met another kitty before, it wasn’t long before Nina was schooling Barnaby and had him wrapped around her finger. Now they constantly play together, and in rare moments, I catch them curled up, furiously grooming each other.
It took about 2 or 3 months before I was able to pat Nina with any regularity, and it was maybe 6 months before she would sit on my lap. After we moved into a new apartment, she became a lot more affectionate and finally “asked” my husband for tickles (to his great delight). Now, she “asks” for pats many times a day and is extremely sweet and loving, although she still hides from anyone other than me and my husband. Her favorite treat is a splash of cream when I make coffee and she loves to chatter at our resident hummingbird. She is the perfect addition to our family.
Thanks for all you do.

TestimonialScooter had been at HOPE for at least a year when I first met him. He landed at HOPE after his owner died and was one scared but loving cat. Once I was ready to give him a forever home I did just that and we have now been together almost 3 years. It took him almost a year to be fully comfortable and secure and he is now one of the sweetest and loving cats I have ever had the pleasure of sharing a home with!
- Caroline
Thanks. He’s such a good boy. So sweet and mellow and adaptable to his new living situation. I was looking for a long time for a companion for my other dog and he’s perfect. When they play they play like idiots and wear each other out.

I just wanted to let you know that Lolita and I are doing fine. It has been a real experience with her. We did ok the first month, until I had to take her to the Vet. That was traumatic for her…being put in a carrier…she was hard to corner! Everything checked out fine at the vet. When we got back home, she ran & hid under furniture, only coming out at night to eat when I was asleep or when I was at work during the day. I would get down on the floor & talk to her under the chair, my nightstand etc. This continued up until about a month ago. I had downloaded some meowing cats and kittens ringtones on my phone, & was playing them one afternoon and she really started meowing. After that she made herself visible after I had gotten into bed & before I turned my light off. We started playing with one of those red laser light toys and she loves it. This has become a nightly ritual. She has gotten ‘braver’ and ‘braver’ about getting closer to me. Then this past weekend she came close enough that I could reach out and pet her, & of course she loved that. My heart melted & I’m calling this my little Christmas miracle. She stays hidden during the day or whenever I’m up & doing things around the house, but my hope is that she will get more & more comfortable. She doesn’t like tv, and wasn’t fond of the men who have been here to do termite inspection, house repairs etc.
There hasn’t been much news to update you with until now, and I am very, very happy she is finally breaking through.
Happy Holidays!
Jean & Lolita
Carlisle (now Percy) and Kiko at rest with their Dad.
My best friend died in my arms on a Thursday, he was a 14 yr old chocolate lab. I had made a bet with the Universe and I won. That bet was this. I have a chronic service connected illness that should have killed me 20 years ago but here I am healthy and still kicking. When I was given the lab puppy in the back of my mind was always the real possibility that I would succumb and leave an elderly dog to die in a shelter. My prayers were to just see these guys, a dog and a cat, to their ends and then whatever my future held would be fine. After Boomer passed and for the next few empty mornings I realized I could not go through that again from puppy to senior and that weekend presented myself to Hope Shelter to take the oldest dog they had. That was Mathilda. Her owner, I was told, had passed leaving her alone. Wow. Does the Universe speak directly to us or what?
I call her Tillie. She’s all girl. She loves to eat and my rugs quickly revealed she can’t do people food though she likes it. She always has a wagging tail and the sweetest, calmest personality. Kitty’s best friend died that day too. Boomer would let the cat give him a bath and curl up next to him. Tillie is quite comfy with Oscar and the two of them have started sitting in the open door looking out together so all is well in the home. I went into this understanding I was not replacing Boomer but adding a Tilliie and if I can give her a home until it’s her time I am honored.
Thanks for helping heal a hole in both our hearts.

About a year and a half ago I adopted a little orange tabby who was named Dexter at the time. He is now called Tigger and he is the light of my roomate and my’s life! He has the most personality I have ever seen in an animal, and he knows exactly how to brighten up someone’s day no matter how bad it might have been. He enjoys any sort of play and being taken into the back yard to explore in the bushes. Thank you Hope Animal Shelter for creating a life long love story!
Sincerely,
Kelsey, Debbie, and Tigger
I’ve been meaning to sent you a testimonial about my wonderful cat from HOPE for the past 11 months, so I’m finally writing it today. Hopefully it will help someone make the decision to adopt this Christmas.
Calliope is, hands-down, the most wonderful cat that I’ve ever known. She came to us when she was about six months old, and she’s incredibly social, playful, and friendly. In fact, we joke that we actually adopted a half-dog, since Calliope plays fetch, rolls over for belly-rubs, and greets us at the door each day. I was a bit dubious of a shelter cat, particularly one who had been a stray, but Calliope came from HOPE Animal Shelter well-adjusted and clearly excited about her forever home. She’s truly been a blessing!
Please feel free to use any and all of the above in any ads you want. Good luck this season with adoptions!

Just wanted to check in and let you know how thoroughly happy we are with Mocha (aka Vaca). She’s been such a good fit for our household, and we are enjoying her so much. We had a house full of relatives (even a dog) over Thanksgiving, and she was the belle of the ball. Everyone enjoyed her, and she enjoyed everyone, even the dog in the group. Yes, she was worth the drive from Tempe to Tucson! We just love her!
- Ken & Peggy
Just wanted to send you an update on Pepper (we now call her Leia). She has quickly adjusted to life with our family and loves going for walks and playing in the yard with my daughters. Thank you HOPE for introducing us to such a loving, happy dog.
-Elisabeth
I just wanted to send you an update on Yuma (renamed from ‘Ziggy’) and say once again how much joy he has brought into our lives over the past few years. Now he even has a dog to play with, and even though Eden is about 65lbs our little 13lbs kitty never fails to let her know who’s the boss, from a good grab around Eden’s neck and smack down, to force-able face licking, to bed-stealing Yuma remains top furry-bottom in the house.
He has gotten much more loving over the years, even though most of his lap-sitting and bed-sleeping still falls into the ‘I’m cold’ or ‘this will totally inconvenience you’ side of things, and he is super helpful whenever I am making a quilt, making sure that all the pieces have a fine layer of cat hair on them. I don’t know what we would do without our cross-eyed kitten.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
- Katrina
Here are the pictures of Wynona the dog we adopted and our dog Louie. They are happy together.

Here is a picture of Coda on his new couch. He has learned how to use the doggy door and is adjusting well. He is a very sweet little boy. Thanks!

Poor Lexus (Harley) must have had a rough start to life… But I am very grateful that HOPE gave her a second chance. I was going through a difficult time when I adopted Lexus, and I truly believe that she saved me just as I saved her. I am glad that my desire to adopt her and my willingness to spend as much money and time as it required to get her to the state of being a healthy, happy, well-adjusted dog was taken seriously. Attached are photos of Lexus taken within the past year.
Thanks for what you do for the animals in our area.

The kids, Jim and I have absolutely fallen in love with Ricky (name we gave Jiminy) and Rocket (name we gave Cricket)!! They have settled in comfortably in our home and have quickly made it their own! Both are doing so great! Ricky has trimmed down a few pounds and Rocket has gained a few! Rocket’s leg continues to heal and he is stronger and stronger every day. Thank You!

My name is Daniel Caouette and I adopted Benny, an Akita mix, on September 4th this year. I just wanted to let you guys know how well we’re doing!
First thing I noticed about Benny was that he didn’t really identify with his name. I tried to get him to use it but it just didn’t seem to stick. After some thought, I came up with a perfect name. Since he has such a large head, I named him after a cartoon character with an equally large head. He goes by Krillin now, and he loves the name! Most of his time is spent lounging around the house, watching tv with me on the couch, and sleeping at the foot of my bed. When I have to go to class, I put him outside. He loves the large yard I have for a house in town. I will catch him running laps around the backyard all the time.
He loves his toys. I really mean LOVES his toys. He has 2 teddy bears, 3 frisbees, 2 tennis balls, a squeaky football, a squeaky bone, and a tug of war rope. When he gets playful, he runs around trying to pick them all up at once. With an adequate number of toys, he starts to shake them around in his mouth like a ragdoll. His favorite toy by far is the squeaky bone. Krillin also has relatives that he gets to see when I take him back home to see my parents. He has 2 play buddies there that keep him busy all the time. There are times when he will play tug of war with one of the dogs for hours and hours. I am very happy to have adopted Krillin. While I can find myself sighing from all the dog hair I find in my dryer’s lint catcher, I never once regret getting Krillin. He brings a smile to my face every day. Thank you so much for all you have done! Without you guys, I would have never found my buddy!
Sincerely,
Daniel & Krillin (Formerly known as Benny)
Here is a Rascal photo taken last week. He is such a sweetheart! I think he’s pretty happy here. Rascal has been having a ball with his new buddy, Dexter! They are perfectly suited for each other, racing each other around the hard, playing tug of war with toys, then dropping with exhaustion. Dexter doesn’t quite get the kiddie pool, though. All of you out there, be sure to go to The Animal Rescue website and vote for Hope to get some money!
- J Marilyn
Bolt is doing well. What a sweet dog! He loves everyone. I took him for a long walk this morning and he was very friendly with neighbors and other dogs. It is going to take some time for Tobi the cat to get used to him, but they are doing better today. I have been working with Bolt on basic obedience (sit, down), and he is catching on quickly (will work for treats!).

Norm Graber, who was volunteering for Hope when I adopted Diamond and who also became a part of my life, sends an update about Loki. He says that he was playing Santa Claus for Hope for Christmas 2008, and at the end of the day he was told that HOPE had covered the adoption fees for a little shaggy kitten. The little guy didn’t have a name for a couple of weeks but when he acquired one — Loki– it was quite appropriate! Loki is now a big beautiful cat who lives and travels with Norm in his RV. He sends this picture.
Thanks to HOPE, four lives were forever changed. You do wonderful work.

I found this feature while looking up the number for a friend. So here is an update on Diamond–or D as she is affectionately known. I adopted Diamond at PetSmart on New Year’s Eve, 2008. She was an older dog, very overweight, out of shape, with bad teeth. My husband had died two weeks before, and I wanted to adopt a dog as a companion for my other dog. Diamond was sad and so were we so we seemed a perfect match – and we were! From a high of 86 lbs, she’s down to 74 lbs, and takes a long walk/run every morning. Thanks to Benarda Veterinary Hospital she’s on a home cooked diet that includes green tea and flaxseed oil, so her mobility has improved enormously. At age 11 (?) she’s a loud, happy girl with a very strong will–and our greatest friend and companion. Here’s a photo of her.
- Carla McKinney
How can you resist that face? Loni is a gorgeous cat, and seems to have a nice personality as well. This easy going girl gets along with other cats. As you can see from the pictures, Loni also enjoys a nice cozy spot for a nap. If you have a place in your heart and life for a this terrific cat, please come and meet Loni.

Want to let you know that Nigel has adjusted beautifully to his new home. He and the pups and our 16 year old cat Mango are all getting along well. Thank you for doing such a great job is raising this very special boy.
- Flo and John
Just thought I would give you an update on Sage, formerly Hazel. She is quite the figurine in the bookshelf, don’t you think. She has made herself at home almost since day one. Very affectionate, she loves to lay on my chest and as a result so does Scully, my other cat. They compete with Zar (Vizsla) and Mara (Weimaraner) for being next to me. My chest isn’t that big, LOL! Luckily the dogs are content to lay by my side. As the cats ‘jockey’ for who is on my chest and who is on the arm of the couch, next to me. Sage is loving the raw diet, though she is picky about it. She prefers the frozen raw medallions (thawed of course) to the freeze dried raw nuggests. So in the morning she gets Taste of the Wild kibble and her evening meal is the raw medallions. She has gained a bit of weight since coming here.

Paquito’s new name is “Tucker.” He knows it very well, and was responding to the new name within a day or so. He’s doing fantastically well, and things have gone much more smoothly than we thought they would. He’s such a good dog, very well mannered, and an effortless addition to the household.
Eddie Wetzler
Tucker is eating well, playing with toys, cuddling with one of my other dogs, getting along fine with the cats, doing all his “business” outside, and sleeping happily on the bed or couch.
He learned to use our doggie-door the first day I brought him home. I’m sure the other 2 dogs leading the way helped. He seems to be great swimmer too. We’ve spent time teaching him where the steps are and how to get out in case of an accidental fall-in, he swims and gets out fearlessly. He loves going on our nightly walks, and is very intent on peeing everywhere and on everything my other male dog does.
He was very unhappy to go to the vet, but checked out fine, and nail trimming is so far unsuccessful, but we’re working on it.
All in all, we are thrilled to have him. Thanks so much for all you are doing. We have a full house now, with 3 dogs and 4 cats, but adoption/rescue will always be the route we take to find new pets when the time comes.
Thanks,
Charlie is doing really well, he is so sweet and loving. He has had no potty accidents, which I am shocked, expected a few during his transition. He was not really eating, but today he ate all I had put in his bowl, then brought me his dish… I think he just had to get settled. He loves the kids, when they leave for school he walks in every room, I think he is looking for them… It is cute. Even my 17 year old son, who is crabby most of the time, I see him often sitting with Charlie on his lap, petting him. I think Charlie is a really good fit for our family.
He has claimed my favorite chair, good thing he likes to share or I would have to find a new one. He has especially taken to my daughter, ever night at her bed time, he follows her to her room and get right in bed with her, I let him stay with her till it is time to go outside for the last potty of the night, then he curls up next to me for the night. We are so glad we decided to stop by pet smart on Friday. And returned on sat.
Thank you.
- Wendy
The dog is Bella, we got her at the humane society in November. She loves Donnie. The first 2 days she was a bit jelous of the attention he got but now she just loves him and follows him around. I think it was a good test for her, she will be sharing attention with a baby in 11 weeks. Donnie is a very well tempered cat, he is very loving. Thank you, we are glad we found him, he fits in well and we love him.
- Sarah

Pippin did not eat or drink Sunday night/Monday morning (expected). She was leery of Dylan (my 14yr. old mini Dachshund mix) and our first short trio walk was erm..interesting. But, by Monday night she was eating and drinking with gusto. Our group walks are quickly getting synchronized and–as you can see in the pics–there is definitely a “two peas in a pod” vibe rapidly developing between these two!
She also does an adorable “happy dance” when I come home (been taking little jaunts out, to prepare them for my return to work), and she has a tiny bark (quite the little watch dog). And did I mention kisses? Got my first one this morning. I’m very surprised at how quickly she is adapting to this new home environment, but certainly delighted at the fact. Looking forward to finding out the results of her tests, so we know what we are dealing with.
Also, her coughing/bronchial chest sounds are still there, mostly when she first wakes up in the morning (a bit of “back-breathing” and hacking). But it goes away. Could be allergies, could be the (possible) Cancer, could be congenital heart issues. One thing at a time though. I’ll keep an eye out and let you know if it gets worse. She is a treasure!
-Gabrielle
Thank you for your assistance with Lady (who Buddy renamed Loula after the dog on his favorite cartoon). She is so sweet and she is a perfect addition to our family. Buddy absolutely loves her! Thank you so much again! Have a great day.
- Yvonne
I just wanted to let you know that Adele is still with us and in very good health. She’s such a pretty kitty… a priss too, but we love her to death. She’s so funny. She’ll beg for your attention, and then when she finally has it, she’ll run away. Gotta love it. When she’s not cuddling she loves to hide and burrow, so we built her a little “apartment” in the corner of our living room. It truly is her… Fortress of Solitude, if you will. I’ve attached some pictures for your blog. I’m doing just fine with my allergies as well, so we may be in the market for a second sometime in the future. Thanks to Shilo for introducing us and a couple girls at Petsmart that very same day. We wish all the kitties and puppies a Happy Thanksgiving and hope they find homes soon!
Sincerely,
Scott & Retta Parker Stevenson
I am sending the enclosed check in the amount of $100 as a donation to your shelter. I was told about you financial difficulties by my sister-in-law Janice Earle. I wanted to help because the shelter in my home area is also having difficulties. I have supported this shelter for many years and know and understand the importance of keeping it going despite the difficult economic times. It is my belief that the ethics of a society is reflected in how we care for the animals that have had their ability to care for themselves taken away. I hope that this small donation helps.

There is nothing more blessed than saving innocent lives. Nothing more shameful than ignoring little beings who need our help. God bless you and your efforts.

It has been about a year now that my children and I wandered into PetSmart and found Helen (Hannah) just waiting for us. Many thanks for HOPE Animal Shelter for giving her such good care! She has been a wonderful kitty — we love her dearly. Best wished for 2010.
- Gwen B.
Thank you, Rhonda, Lynda, and Karen for being at PetSmart last Friday afternoon when my husband and I came in to look for a kitty. We had just said goodbye that week to our beloved 15 year old kitty Cody and I was filled with so many emotions – but most of all there was a big a hole in my heart. Well, my husband Keith cuddled with Andrew that day and he trusted that little Andrew would begin to mend that hole in our lives. And Keith was right. Andrew (now Grayson Andrew) had brought so much joy in our life. We tell him about his Grandpa Cody and are so thankful for God’s healing that has already come through this little boy you at HOPE cared for these past 6 months. Thank you so much for giving of your time and love. Please enjoy the chocolate pecans cookies.
- Love, Keith and Kay L.

dot and janis
I am so grateful to all of you! The enclosed photo will illustrate why. My beloved cat companion of 19 years crossed over the rainbow bridge on July 17, 2008. I grieved! And as those feelings of extreme grief were beginning to to dissipate I saw your “Adoption Today” sign at PetSmart as I came out of Traders Joe’s. I thought I would take a look and see if it was time for me to have another cat companion. Turned that it was time and I told the people there that I would like to adopt “Dot”. She looked exactly like my old cat when he came into my life as a four-month old 19 years before. She had a white dot on her chest and that was it. The rest of her was black.
[Later] I returned to PetSmart… that’s how Janis came to join our household. It is obvious that these kittens received great care and love during the first four months of their lives. They are happy, enormously affectionate, enthusiastic, and very healthy. Thank you for that. I am enclosing a check so that you can continue your good work along with a picture of my family. Enjoy!

sissy
Thanks for what you folks do. I got my dog Sissy from you a couple years ago. She fits right in with my other dog and we all love each other very much.
- Signed, Happy Family
On September 24th, we said goodbye to our beloved Welsh Corgi, Dewi, at the age of thirteen years. Thanks to the wonderful care he received from Dr. Mary Kay Klein and the staff of Southwest Veterinary Oncology, he survived bladder cancer for 5 years post-diagnosis. I will forever be grateful for his life and our many fond memories. Enclosed is a personal check in the amount of $500 as a contribution to HOPE Animal Shelter in memory of Dewi. I request that the funds be used for veterinary care for the dogs entrusted to your care. I will continue to bring supplies to HOPE each week when possible. If you have special needs or ways that I can help in your important work, please let me now. Thank you for your dedicated work on behalf of the animals.
- Sincerely, Suzanne V.
Several months ago I visited your shelter and met Max and decided to sponsor him, mostly because he is so lovable but also because we both are cancer patients. I will continue to sponsor him but I want you know that if he should ever need any medical treatments, you may call me and count on me to pay for those treatments. God bless.
- Carol S.
We saw the story on the news about how short you are on funds. It is a wonderful thing you do. To care for all the cats and pets. I hate to see animals euthanized just because there are too many to be adopted or need special care. I decided that we had to help you out. All of our past animals were rescued as are our two cats and dog that we love very much. We want to help you do what you do for for animals. Thank you.
- Dennis and Lynetta
…I wrote Ellen DeGeneres about your shelter, she’s a real animal lover, hopefully she’ll help with at least food from her company. …keep you fingers crossed.
- Merrie
People were posting on Facebook that you are facing hardship and that you are a no-kill shelter. I’d hate to see another shelter go under. Wish it could be more, but hope it helps somehow.
- Best, Susan D.

Enclosed is a check to help cover your expenses. I saw a segment about your financial troubles on Channel 9. They’re still running it, so I hope lots of other people see it and send donations. God bless you all the important work you do.
- Yours truly, Robert S.
We would like to thank your organization for providing a no-kill haven for abandoned dogs and cats. We especially admire what you do for the special needs animals whom very few would adopt. We hope this small donation helps keep this wonderful organization alive, along with the precious animals you care for. - Sincerely, Linda, Jim, and Brian B.
I saw the story about your desperate need of funds to keep your shelter in operation on television last night. I can’t do much, but if my small contribution will help, I’ll send it to you with gratitude to you for caring so deeply for the animals. God bless you and I pray for your success.
- Thank you, Francis W.
I hope this little bit will help in a small way. We need people like you who care so much for our animals. Thank you and keep up the great work.
- Sincerely, Joyce S.
I saw you on TV. I hope people respond. My heart goes out for all beautiful little furry friends. If everybody would just give a $1. Thank you and Karen and all the giving people.
I read with interest your newsletter and support your organization. Your number of placements and volunteers speaks volumes about HOPE’s worth and value. My mother believes Tucson is a magical place of wondrous things and wonderful people. The HOPE organization is surely an example. Please add my name to the list of email recipients for your newsletter.

Here’s some money for you, to buy some food. I saw on the news that you needed some help. I care about you so much. I want to be a Veterinarian when I grow up. I want to help your cousins/family. Stay strong.

We adopted Buffy (above) from Hope Animal Shelter about 5 months ago. As you can see, she was a very busy kitty! She is now older and wiser, but just as cute! She is the perfect cat for us, and has lived up to her description (from her foster mom) as affectionate and a real joy to have around. Thank you for the care and loving environments you give to your animals, it shows in the love and trust they give to their new family!
- Most gratefully, Tricia Tozier

We adopted Marvin from HOPE on December 11th, 2010 when he was 5 months old. His name was Shea at that time. After 3 months Marvin has adjusted and is loving and healthy and doing well. He loves our other cat Mitzi who is also a shelter cat.

My husband and I adopted Willow (formerly Pearl) about a year ago. We fell in love with her sweet personality and goofy little crossed eyes. As soon as she arrived she made herself at home. She and our tabby Georgie became best friends right away and hardly leave each others side. Willow has some personality quirks that make her extra special like her insistence in licking your hand as you pet her and her strange habit of kneading you for up to an hour (at least that was the longest I could take it). She is the sweetest kitty ever and we are so happy to have her in our home.

My mother and I hit the jackpot! Savannah is so sweet and loving. She’s adorable!
She is love. We adopted her sister, Mattie, too… and Savannah is so happy to have an adoring older sister. They love each other and play well together. We’re a happy family!

Thank you, Susan, for entrusting me with a more responsible role with the beautiful and precious dogs and cats at HOPE, the volunteers and customers. HOPE has opened my eyes to the positive effects a no-kill shelter has on a city and amazing lengths people go through to ensure it stays open. Getting to know and bond with HOPE’s animals has seen such a great experience; after every shift, for example, I always find myself talking to my partner and friends about some cat to dog that stood out and reminded me why I love what I do. While I may be moving out of state, I will continue to help HOPE financially. Tucson must have a no-kill shelter for cats and dogs! Each and every dog and cat I have met will forever live in my heart because why have brought me so much joy, it is indescribable. If you meed my assistance during this transition, please let me know. Thanks again for this opportunity.
- Angelique (past employee)
Thank you so much for your wonderful work and for providing our only no-kill facility in Tucson. The two cats I adopted from you came from a 50 cat hoarder and I must say, they are the smartest, silliest most interesting cats I’ve ever had (and I’ve had cats my whole life). I don’t know what to attribute this to, but I’m grateful every day for stopping by Petsmart on Grant that day 2 1/2 years ago and adopting them . I couldn’t love them more. I wish I could donate more but being on a fixed income it makes it difficult. And with so many animal groups out there the top 4 on my list get $, and HOPE is #1 on my list because if it wasn’t for you I would not have my 2 precious crazies making my life complete.
Sincerely,
Carol, Oliver-Stanley & Izabella
To Susan and all your helpers,
Jester (blind dog adopted from HOPE) said to tell you thanks for all the good work you do everyday throughout the year and he hopes St. Francis will bless each of your for your kindness.
- Pat
Thank you so much for the love you give to all the Furry Beautiful Creatures. We are so fortunate to have HOPE here.
- Christa
I would like to extend my personal thanks you to each of you. Thank for taking in my 2 cats Peanut and Courtney – giving them a loving home during a difficult time. I visit your website and see they are no longer there. I am certain they have been adopted into a family that will love and care for them as I did. Thank you for running such a nice shelter and caring for so many. Please send out a thank you to their adoptive family.
- Sincerely, Valorie
Last January we adopted our Pablo from your shelter. His name at that time was Clyde and was dropped off at your place with his sister Bonnie. I am sending you a small donation to let you know we have become very attracted to him. Other than parasites, he has been very healthy. It became evident that due to his cautiousness about new and different things, he probably was finding for himself quite a while. We have been working with him on his fears and have progressed. I don’t know if he will ever totally be free of then but he is in a loving home and very well taken care of.
-Lee and Nancy
I just wanted to drop you a quick note to continue to thank you for the tireless work you do on behalf of the needy animals. I have never and will never forget what you did for Jasper the black cat. Unfortunately, finances have taken a nosedive lately, and I’m sorry I can’t do more, but please accept this check in sincere thanks for your efforts and your enormous heart. You are my hero!
- Villadito
Thanks for your good work. Read the “Unexpected Burden” article in the AZ Daily Star, dated 8 June 2008. Hope my small donation helps. Keep the public informed. I think we need the education and I’m certain it will stimulate more positive action. Thanks again.
- Hugh and Judith
Here’s a donation for whatever you need for the animals. I saw the news article about the mom dog and her 9 puppies. Hope this helps. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to animals.
- Anonymous
Please accept my very small donation. Thank you for your courage to continue to work – that may not be appreciated as much as it should. If possible, please try to work on legislation to encourage animal owners to spay and neuter non-working pets/animals.
-Lee
I got a dog from you folks about a year ago. She was abused badly. I named her Sissy. When she is laying on the couch under the air conditioner she looks at me like… “Thanks, I love you Dad.” Keep up the good work and I know the animals love you for what you do for them.
-Ron and Sissy
Those 9 puppies, I hope are voracious eaters? I’m doing my best. God bless the mommy, the puppies and you good hearted people!
-BGL
In honor of my birthday, my friends donate to a charity of my choice. I chose HOPE Animal Shelter. I know you can use this money, so use it with my best wishes.
-Carol
I brought my Yorkshire Terrier “Duke” to see Dr. Daroowalla a couple of years ago from Illinois. I appreciate her holistic approach. I was very pleased to be informed of your HOPE Animal Shelter which I’m sure is as needed in Tucson as anywhere. Good luck in this important endeavor – I’m glad I can help.
-CD
The week of Labor Day we adopted Preston form HOPE Animal Shelter. Preston came to us a little thin, very timid and a lot quirky hang-ups. Since becoming a member of our family he has gained eight pounds and has become an integral part of our family. He still is very timid and hesitates about certain noises. We wonder what his early puppy hood was like. He loves going for walks, riding in the car and especially likes digging up the drip system and running in the yard with the hose in his mouth. He has brought much love, happiness and joy to our lives. Please accept our donation for your wonderful organization.
- Fred and Liz
I have some information I would like to pass on about Betty, now known as TigerLily for her beautiful coloring. When we arrived home, our miniature poodle.s face lit up because we had brought him home a new “toy”. TigerLily was not impresses, and asked to be put down. The silly dog followed her around for a day and a half, and now they sleep side by side. I know she is one the 18 cats rescued from a hoarder, I wanted yo to know that her reaction lead me to believe that she has been around a dog before and has no problems with them. That information may help you in future adoptions of these cats. She seems painfully skinny, and we are working on putting on some weight. Also, she has umped up on the table and counter several times, but simply removing her with an easy “no” has pretty much stopped the problem. We feel this is the perfect cat for us, and wanted you to know how much we appreciate you help in adopting this cat.
- Marlene and Michael
Dear Ms. Scherl:
Enclosed is $10 to help you in your fine work to save the lives of needy cats and dogs. Obviously, I am an animal lover and I am impressed that your mission is to help give them a life rather than euthanize them.
Sincerely,
Emily
Hope Animal Shelter people,
Thanks for all you do to protect all the cats and dogs that are unwanted. Please see the enclosed check for food or whatever is needed at the shelter.
- Darlene
TestimonialThank you for saving Marley. From the day we adopted him he has been the light of our lives. He is kind, gentle, polite and well trained. Whomever gave him up surely misses this sweet boy. We have not had a pet in over ten years, but now that we have retired we have the time to enjoy one, our Marley. He is the perfect dog for us. We laugh every day at his antics, enjoy taking him on walks and cuddling him on our laps. We are so impressed with how you make sure that each adoption is given the tools to make it successful. We are eternally grateful.
- Mary and Ken Droscher

Yazzie was adopted about 5yrs ago. He’s an adorable handsome man. There is a story about a cat named Yazzie in Bean town who was a stray. He pestered one man so much, he eventually found a home. This was his name at the shelter.
- Pam Hoffman

McTavish was adoped about 3yrs ago (Toonces-the SNL driving cat on SNL when he was at Hope). He loves to wake me up & snuggle in the morning. He’ll be on next year’s Christmas card.
- Pam Hoffman
Yoshi fit right into our home from the first day he became part of it. Never any fear and never so much as a hiss at my other cats (although he may have given our crazy dog a few warnings). He can always be found in whatever room I’m in. He likes to stay close. And he sleeps next to me every night. He’s only 11 months now and already bigger than the average full-grown cat… I can only imagine how big this little lover is going to be. Please know that I’ll be eternally grateful to you, HOPE, and Rhonda for bringing me the gift that is Yoshi.
- Khara
TestimonialI rounded up some pictures of Elvis I’ve taken over the past year and a half. I’m sure you remember he had a partial leg when I adopted him and as you will be able to see in the pictures the leg is gone now. I went ahead and had it taken off last July because it just wasn’t healing and I know it was hurting him. But he sure is a happy boy! We go hiking and camping and to the lake and he LOVES to swim. He also has 2 sisters he takes full advantage of bothering any chance he has.
Hope you enjoy the pictures!
- Sheena Scott
TestimonialChelsea is a wonderful loving doggie. Adopting her has been a lot of fun (and work too). Support hope or consider adopting if you can.
- Ismael Santos
TestimonialI used to volunteer awhile back and while I was there I fell in love with Meko. I decided that we couldn’t live without each other so I decided to bring him home with me. A big move for a person who always claimed to be a dog person… Anyway he’s been here with me and my family for about 7 months and he brings us as much joy and we bring him. He is the snuggliest and sweetest little animal there ever was. I’m not sure how I ever got along without him! Here is a picture of him in his most common position… asking for a belly scratch! Thank you for taking such great care of him until we found each other! He has been the perfect edition to my family.
- Julie
TestimonialHogan came into my life on February 18, 2009 while I was a volunteer at Hope Animal Shelter. He would capture my heart every time I took him from the shelter to Pet Smart while he was hoping for a home. He won me over. We have been best friends ever sense. I cannot say how grateful I am for HOPE. Thank for you recognizing that even a F.I.V. positive cat with a bad ear deserves a loving home. Everyone that meets Hogan falls in love with him. He is a gentle giant. He loves his new “stroller” and we go for walks around the block daily. He loves to say hello to the birds and all the other animals around. Thanks Susan and Ronda and all of you that work so hard. I know that Hogan was a cat that was let out on “the floor” and started being beaten up! Rest assured.. your cowardly lion is in the best of hands and loved so much. Hogan sleeps in my bed. I will often wake up to him snoring… typical man. I love him dearly. Thank you again for not being cowards and for sticking up for those who need to be rescued. My sincere love.
- Lynda
TestimonialCairo and Tanzy is doing well. Cairo is hiding most of time but she doesn’t seem to afraid. I hope she come out more and feel comfortable. Tanzy is sweet! She follows me everywhere and curious everything in my house. She is little mischief:) I’m very happy to be with them. I will take some photos of them send it to you sometimes. Can you tell me how and why Cairo got to shelter? It might help to build good relationship with Cairo. Also Tanzy had Ringwarm before. Should I take her to the vet to check up? If you have any suggestion, please let me know. Thank you so much for wonderful cats! I’m so happy to spend time with them!
- Masanori
TestimonialI met Abril in 2009 when I began volunteering for HOPE, and it didn’t take long for us to form a special bond. I was shocked to learn that such a sweet little girl could go un-adopted for over 2 years. Having never owned a cat before, it took me awhile, but I eventually brought her home with me. She can be a handful at times, but she’s very sweet and playful, and it never takes long for any of my guests to fall in love with her. I couldn’t have asked for a better first cat, she’s truly changed my life!
-Russell
TestimonialWe adopted Tucson (formerly Cody) in the summer of 2008 to provide a little company and exercise for our older cat Malden (our giant gray cat). While they got off to a bit of a rocky start, they now enjoy each others company. They love to sleep snuggled together and play chase. Tucson is an excellent lap cat and he keeps me company at my desk at home. He has been an excellent addition to our family.
- Nikole Lewis
TestimonialAs a HOPE Volunteer I was lucky enough to meet Sophie the first day she arrived. Well, she had me at meow! Almost 3 years now and she is just as cute and playful as if she were still a kitten!
- Caroline
TestimonialWe want to thank you and all of the staff at Hope for your help with our adoption of Hope. She has captured our hearts, and seems to have made the transition smoothly. She smiles a lot, wags her tail constantly and loves affection. She has already brought us much joy. I have not yet heard from the vet about her surgeries. Hopefully I will today. I am enclosing a couple of picture we took of Hope. Again, thank you, to you and the staff.
Sincerely,
- Barry and Tom
I just wanted to let you know that we all made it home safe to Idaho. Oracle, who is now named Misdemeanor (not my doing – ask my fiancé about that one
) made the trip just fine. We went to the vet and got a tranquilizer for him, so he slept most of the way here. He is settling in well – he sleeps with us and plays now, showing a lot more personality now that he feels safe here. We love him so much, and we are so glad that we adopted him. As you can see from the picture I’m attaching, he has taken over my bed and feels quite at home. Thank you all for the wonderful care you gave him until we could take him. Hopefully we’ll see you again, and I wish you all the best.
Thanks for everything!
- Cara
TestimonialI adopted Adam 2 weeks ago and he is just the sweetest, cutest, funniest and craziest little guy ever!!! It is soooooooooo much fun to have a pet around!! I couldn’t imagine a life anymore without having cats as my companians.
- Sandi
TestimonialThanks for all you do! I adopted LuLu from Hope. She is such a wonderful cat!
- Michael
TestimonialMy daughter and I adopted Dylan, (Three legged kitty) He is doing much better, at being part of the family.
- Linnda
TestimonialHello! We adopted “DeeCee” from HOPE and just wanted to give you an update. She fit into our family like shes always been here! She’s wonderful! My boys renamed her Madison, or Maddi for short. She follows us around, loves to play, and snuggles under the covers. Thanks so much for rescueing Maddi so she could find her way to us!
- Jennifer
TestimonialAuggie (the dog formerly known as Prince) is making progress…he does a wonderful job with our training sessions…can’t wait til it transfers over to real life (considering he ripped apart one of our antique chairs).
- Carrie
TestimonialI adopted Selkie (the black Tortoiseshell) from Hope nearly four years ago. You called her Zsa Zsa & had her litter mates (all “Z” names) as well. She is so fun & ornery! Lyra, the smaller Tortie, was from another rescue org. Both girls adore each other! I recently adopted a very lively young dog & Selkie is her playmate. They often groom each other & cuddle up together. My life is so much happier with my beautiful “kids” in it. Thank you!
- Terri
TestimonialIn a few months I will have had Jaida (aka Geneva) for a year, and I can’t tell you what an impact and blessing she’s been to me. She plays fetch, loves everyone who comes to the house, has her ‘mommy’ petting sessions, and is just the best kitty – she truly found me, and she has her ‘forever’ home. Thank you for rescuing her so she could find me – she’s a little miracle.
- Vanessa
TestimonialWanted you all to see how my little girl (known to HOPE as Mercedes) Ember has turned out! It has been almost a year since I adopted her and I cannot thank HOPE enough for bringing her into my life…she is my light and totally spoiled rotten =) Thanks!
- Stephanie
TestimonialThis is our 6.5 month old boy, Jim, who we adopted 3 months ago.
- Dan
TestimonialI went to PetSmart with a friend to get cat litter and just happened to stop by the HOPE rescue table. There was the most beautiful dog peaking out between the bars of the crate. I had been passively looking for a dog for years so my friend told me to just take her our for a little walk. Trinity (formally Cocoa) had been our very spoiled baby for almost a year now. She is truly one of the highlights of my day just wake up to her smiling face. She loves to go out to the park, have puppy play-dates to her best friends house and go have coffee on the weekends.
She is the most amazing dog and I don’t know what I would do without her. I take her with me everywhere and everyone always complements her on how sweet and beautiful she is, I always tell people I got her from HOPE. Thank you for helping me find my best friend!
- Amy
TestimonialThis is Toby, or Tobylicious like I call him. I adopted him in May of 2009. I’m so lucky to have found him. He is funny, affectionate and always hungry. He is best friends with my Golden Retriever, I couldn’t have asked for a better companion for Sparky and myself. I am so happy to have found Toby, thanks HOPE for all the wonderful things you do.
- Lilly
TestimonialI just sent you a $100 donation through Donation Center. It is in honor of Beatrice Borealis, my tabby cat, born 11-03-08. She was adopted from your organization at the Swan/Grant PetsMart on February 14, 2009. She is quite the kitty. Happy New Year.
- Diane Deyoe
Testimonial[Pookie (formerly Camilla)] has turned into a very playful cat and likes to retrieve whatever she can carry in her mouth. Socks are not safe. She also likes to lay on my lap or chest if I am trying to read the paper on the couch and also likes to walk across my laptop, which makes for an interesting challenge. I am very happy that Pookie told me to take her home. She brings a good energy into our home.
- Dolly
TestimonialDuster is doing great! He adjusted very well into his new home and has been nothing but a blessing in my life, I don’t know what I’d do without him! Him in his favorite place to lay, on top of whatever I am doing! He is amazing. Thanks for everything!
- Courtney
TestimonialNate is settling in wonderfully in his new home. He has also acquired a new name, Dash, both because he loves to dash from room to room, and also because he is so dashingly handsome. He and his new big brother, Bubbles, have decided to be friends and are getting along very well. We want to thank you for taking such wonderful care of him, and for allowing him to be part of our little family.
- Amy

Thank you for making animals available at PetSmart. I adopted Lizzie almost one week ago and she is wonderful. She didn’t even seem like she needed an adjustment time. She answers us when we speak to her and knows when I need to pet her. I call her from the other side of the mobile home and she comes to me. I just love her. Thanks.
- Teri
TestimonialI would like to write pages and pages in this letter. But I will need to keep it short because I want to take Enon (Riley) for a walk. He has already filled my heart with joy. I cannot believe how well trained he is already. He sits, he stays, he almost lies down, and he is a great walker already. And he is perfectly housebroken. You have done a tremendous job with him.
- Joe
TestimonialLatte is a great puppy and we are so glad we made the decision to adopt her. We want to thank you and the staff at Hope Animal Shelter for making the adoption process easy and comfortable.?We stopped by three times to visit Latte before we actually adopted her?and never did we feel pressured or unwanted there. It’s obvious Latte received great care while at Hope and because of that she is a happy, well adjusted puppy, who we are?looking forward to growing old with.
